What Makes Kampot Pepper the World's Finest

If you ask any serious chef about the world's best pepper, chances are they will mention Kampot pepper. Grown in the lush province of Kampot in southern Cambodia, this pepper has earned a reputation that rivals the finest wines and coffees of the world.

A Terroir Unlike Any Other

Kampot's magic lies in its soil and climate. The region sits between the Elephant Mountains and the Gulf of Thailand, where quartz-rich soil meets warm coastal breezes and seasonal monsoons. This unique combination creates growing conditions that cannot be replicated anywhere else on earth.

The result is a pepper with extraordinary depth and complexity — floral, pungent, and unmistakably Kampot.

Centuries of Tradition

Pepper has been cultivated in Kampot since the 13th century, when Chinese traders first brought pepper vines to Cambodia's southern coast. Over centuries, Kampot farmers refined their techniques, developing the traditional method of training vines on tall wooden poles that is still used today.

PGI Certification

In 2016, Kampot pepper received Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status from the European Union — the same level of protection granted to Champagne, Parma ham, and Roquefort cheese. This certification guarantees that every peppercorn labeled "Kampot pepper" was grown, harvested, and processed within the defined Kampot region according to strict quality standards.

Three Varieties, Three Personalities

  • Black Kampot Pepper — Bold and complex, with notes of eucalyptus, mint, and fresh wood
  • Red Kampot Pepper — Rare and fruity, with sweet heat and tropical undertones
  • White Kampot Pepper — Delicate and aromatic, with a clean, sharp heat

Each variety tells the story of its terroir. Each one is worth seeking out.
